Introducing Sophie Mathis - Muralist
Submitted by vsample on Thu, 10/01/2020 - 13:36
Main information: Sophia Mathis was born in Bozeman, Montana in 2001, April 24th. Moved to Missoula Montana at two years old when her mother found a new job opportunity at Saint Patrick Hospital. Sophia Graduated from Big Sky High school in 2019, and is now attending the University of Montana studying Psychology in hope to become a Psychiatrist.
Early Struggles and Art: Growing up my parents divorced when I was six years old. Shortly after my dad remarried and my mom was diagnosed with cancer. This had an immense effect on my mental health so I resorted to painting. I started oil painting when I was in 4th grade. I struggled to find a unique style for myself. Only thing I knew was that I loved to purchase the biggest Canvas’s at the store. For my senior project in High school I painted multiple murals around the school and fell in love. I realized that I wasn’t interested in painting on canvas and having art galleries, I was interested in painting for the community, whether or not I get paid. Stepping back from a Mural after I had just finished it gives me a euphoric feeling indescribable.
Mentors and Heroes: My biggest heroes in my life are my mom and dad, Susi Mathis and Brad Mathis. They have supported my passion for art and I am so grateful for them. I am also grateful for my mentor Monte Dolack for realizing the potential I have in the art community and taking me under his wing. I would also like to give thanks to my High school science teacher Brandon Honzel, for always lifting my spirits and supporting my dreams as an artist.
Life changing events: Recently my best friend passed away in a car accident. It’s encouraged me to live my life to its full potential. I’m making sure to put myself out there and paint as many murals as I can. I have also been struggling really bad with my mental health recently after being diagnosed with BPD and trying to find the correct medication to help me.
